Director Statement

Living through the COVID pandemic in the U.S. as an Asian was hard, physically and emotionally. When I learned the news of the 2021 Atlanta spa shootings, the deaths of the six Asian women that resulted, and the numerous other random attacks on Asian people throughout the country, my heart sank to my core. The perpetrators of these attacks did not just hurt the victims, but their entire families, their romantic partners, and anyone else connected to them. I remember one of my closest friends from Taiwan messaging me about an attack on a Taiwanese girl studying in the US. She was struck in the head with a hammer while walking on the streets of New York. The random and unprovoked attack left her so traumatized that she had to stop studying and return home. My friend from Taiwan was genuinely worried about me said “this could be you.” That struck me to my core; it was not the thought of it happening to me that was heartbreaking, but how deeply it would affect him and my family. After that, I immediately went home and wrote the script for “Cross Over”. I felt that I had an obligation to tell a story about healing and letting someone we love go if anything were to happen to them.
